History of Delos Island

Delos Island was one of the greatest sanctuaries in all of Greece.Centered in the heart of the Cyclades, it was the hub of a golden age for spiritual and economic development.

Delos, in ancient Greek, means clear, brought to light. The beautiful myth states that, Delos, the island of the sun, appeared from amid the waves when Leto, who was being pursued by Hera, took refuge there and brought Apollo and Artemis into the world. The birth of Apollo, the god of the sun, on this island, is undoubtedly related to the morphology of Delos.

This tiny island of a little more than five square kilometers in size, and not far from the shores of Mykonos, had been the religious center since 1000 BC, and a commercial center since 478 BC. An island of grandeur and wealth over the millennia it is considered to be the jewel island of the Aegean Sea and is listed by Unesco as one of mankind's most important cultural and historical sites. Delos was a sacred island for Ancient Greeks and with the Delos oracle the island became the holiest place in the Aegean.
